SUBSTANCE: source base station can request resources of a shared data bandwidth from the target base station on behalf of a mobile device and allocate resources for the mobile device. The mobile device can calculate the time difference between the source and target base stations and can perform handover by transmitting through the shared data bandwidth using the time difference, generally, to ensure correct timing of transmission. To this end, the target base station can have transmission time intervals where it can transmit with an extended periodic prefix so as to guarantee more reliable handover for the mobile device.

EFFECT: assisting handover of a mobile device in a wireless network from a source base station to a target base station without using a random-access channel.
