FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: magnetic deflection system has a permanent magnet, a magnetic conductor and two pole terminals, the end of one of which has a convex and the other a concave cylindrical surface. The plane of symmetry of the permanent magnet is parallel to the plane of symmetry of the pole terminals. The diameter of the cylindrical surface is equal to the length of the working part of the band of the thermal ioniser h. The convex surface is in form of a semi-cylinder, and the concave surface is in form of a segment of a cylindrical surface interfaced with two planes which cross at an angle (180 - µ)°, where µ is the value of the centre angle of segment of the cylindrical surface 30° ≤ µ ≤ 150°, wherein the width of the magnetic gap s on the axis of the pole terminals is equal to S/w = 1 + h/2w (1 - cosµ/2), where w is the width of the band of the thermal ioniser.
EFFECT: higher efficiency of selecting caesium atoms based on energy states thereof.
