FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method of making a workpiece which can be used to make an active optical fibre having at least one core, which corresponds to said workpiece, comprising steps for: preparing, at the initial process step, a quartz tube and a SiO2-A/A mixture which contains SiO2 particles and A/A particles (amplification/attenuation); reinforcing the quartz tube having an inner space bounded at the bottom end by a closing apparatus made from porous material such as porous glass; pouring the SiO2-A/A mixture into the inner space of the quartz tube; feeding a stream of gas, such as oxygen O2, helium He, chlorine Cl2 or fluorine F through a first closing apparatus and through the SiO2-A/A mixture contained in the quartz tube, and heating the quartz tube to clean and calcinate the SiO2-A/A mixture at temperature below the glass-transition point, preferably at about 1200°C; preferably, connecting a connecting device to the top end of the primary quartz tube and generating low pressure inside the inner space; heating at least the bottom part of the rough workpiece at temperature higher than the glass-transition point in order to fuse the quartz tube and the SiO2-A/A mixture.
EFFECT: improved uniformity of the refraction index of the fibre.
