FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: compared to existing inertial positioning systems, the disclosed method and apparatus for measuring banking angle of aircraft are based on another physical principle and employ radio navigation equipment. The method of measuring the banking angle involves emission of horizontal linearly polarised electromagnetic waves from a point with known coordinates. The electromagnetic waves are received on-board the aircraft using a receiving antenna whose eigen polarisation rotates with a certain frequency. The banking angle of the aircraft is determined from the phase of the spectral component at double the frequency of rotation of the polarisation plane of the received signal, said phase being measured at the output of the receiver.
EFFECT: preventing constant accumulation of measurement error over time.
