SUBSTANCE: disclosed is an encoding method which involves: defining an access unit (step S502-S508); and coding each of the images included in the access unit, for each access unit (step S526). The defining (step S502-S508) includes: determining a unit of coding for determining whether the images included in the access unit are to be uniformly coded on a per-field basis or on a per-frame basis (step S502); and determining a field type for determining whether the images are to be uniformly coded as top fields or bottom fields (step S504-S508) when it is determined that the images included in the access unit are to be coded on a per-field basis. During coding (step S526), each of the images is coded for each access unit in a format determined in when determining a unit of coding (step S526) and when determining a field type (step S502-S508).

EFFECT: defining a container or access unit, when each of the images of different types is coded differently by frame coding or field coding.
