SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. A decoding method for decoding an encoded stream, obtained by encoding a first group of images and a second group of images for each access unit, wherein information on a first flag is extracted from one of the images of the first group of images and the second group of images, said information indicating whether images included in the access unit are encoded on a per-field basis or per-frame basis; decoding an image of the first group of images on a per-frame basis when information on the first flag indicates that images were encoded on a per-frame basis, and decoding an image of the second group of images on a per-frame basis by accessing the per-frame decoded image of the first group of images, wherein the image of the second group of images corresponds to the image of the first group of images; extracting from one of the images of the first group of images and the second group of images information on a second flag indicating whether images were encoded as upper fields or lower fields; decoding the image of the first group of images as upper fields or as lower fields depending on the information on the second flag, and decoding the image of the second group of images as upper fields or as lower fields.
