FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: liquid crystal display device has pixels (P1) and (P2), each having three subpixels (R1, G1, B31) and (R2, G2, B2). If the input signal indicates that a chromatic colour should be displayed, one of the subpixels (B1 and B2) is turned on and at least one of the subpixels (R1, R2, G1 and G2) is also turned on. If the average brightness level of subpixels (B1 and B2) in a case where the input signal indicates that a chromatic colour should be displayed is essentially equal to the brightness level of subpixels (B1 and B2) in another situation where the input signal indicates that an achromatic colour should be displayed, the brightness levels of these subpixels (B1 and B2) in the former situation are different from the brightness levels of the subpixels (B1 and B2) in the latter situation.

EFFECT: improved viewing angle characteristics, minimisation of colour shift during side viewing of the display screen.
