FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 1,4-dioxane-2,3-diol, which is a reactant for producing heterocyclic nitrogen-containing compounds (particularly pyrazines) and is also used in photography. The method involves condensation of glyoxal with ethylene glycol while heating with removal of water. The reaction is carried out at 50°C for 90 minutes. Water is removed by rotary vacuum evaporation at residual pressure of 50 mm Hg. Reactants are taken in the following molar ratios: glyoxal - 1.0, ethylene glycol - 1.0.
EFFECT: invention increases output of the end product.
