FIELD: woodworking industry.

SUBSTANCE: in the method based on obtaining the image of the butts of logs, processing the obtained images using a computer, and determining the volume of stack of round timber, a preliminary measurement of the length of several logs located on a contour of the stack is carried out using distance-measuring device, the obtained data is entered into the computer, and the actual length of the stack is determined as the arithmetic mean of the measured lengths of logs. To obtain the images of the butts of logs the ultrasonic pinpoint scanning of the butts of logs is carried out on each side of the stack from the extreme left point of the stack to the extreme right point of the stack or in reverse order by horizontal movement with a certain spacing of a vertical scanning measuring beam, in case of the presence of reflected radiation in the measuring point the presence of a measurement object is fixed, and in the absence of reflected radiation in this measuring point a conclusion is drawn about the absence of the measurement object, the resulting array of points which represent the information about the measurement object is entered in a computer, the resulting array of points is displayed on the display, the resulting image is analysed. On the presence of points and their distribution on the screen the exact boundaries of the butts of logs are defined, and the total area of the butts of logs are calculated, then taking into account the previously obtained actual length of the logs in the stack the volume of the stack is defined as the product of the total area of the butts of logs and the actual length of the logs in the stack. Also a device for determining the volume of the stack of round timber located on the vehicle is described.
