SUBSTANCE: device has a liquid crystal display panel in vertical alignment - in-plane switching (VA-IPS) mode; a backlighting unit; a light source with controlled brightness through pulse-width modulation (PWM); and a control unit which controls the liquid crystal display panel and the backlighting unit. The control unit receives data on the rate of reaction of change in alignment of liquid crystal molecules and changes the duty ratio of the signal for PWM brightness control in accordance with data on rate of reaction. If the rate of reaction of the liquid crystal molecules is relatively high, the SD is excited with a relatively low duty ratio. If the rate of reaction of the liquid crystal molecules is relatively low, the SD is excited with a relatively high duty ratio, and no black frame is inserted. Liquid crystal display device.
