FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: method involves heating of slabs, roughing-down to a roll of intermediate thickness, cooling of the roll and its further multi-pass finishing rolling with regulated temperature of the beginning and end of rolling to a plate of final thickness; with that, cooling of the roll is performed by means of back-and-forth movement along water-cooled rollers, the inner cavity of the barrel of which is pre-filled with heat-conducting material balls. Amplitude of back-and-forth movement of the roll is set so that it is not less than the length of circle of water-cooled rollers; the roll is cooled down to the temperature of its surface by 50-100°C lower than the temperature of beginning of finishing rolling and exposed in the air during 5-10 s. The roll is cooled down to the temperature uniformly rising from its beginning to the end in the rolling direction by 20-50°C. Diameter of balls that are used for filling of end sections of the cavity of the barrels is set so that it exceeds the diameter of the balls filling in its middle part by 1.3-1.5, or heat conductivity of material of the balls that are used for filling of the barrel inner cavity is set so that it increased from the barrel edges to its middle.
