SUBSTANCE: unit (21) for calculating backlight luminance determines backlight luminance based on an image signal for the displayed image. A unit (122) for determining a moving image determines whether the displayed image is a moving image based on the image signal. A unit (123) for calculating an adjustment value increases the last adjustment value by a given value to obtain a new adjustment value if the displayed image is a moving image, and reduces the last adjustment value by a given value to obtain a new adjustment value if the displayed image is a fixed image. A summation unit (124) adds the adjustment value to the backlight luminance to adjust backlight luminance. The present invention can be used in a liquid crystal display device.

EFFECT: preventing image quality deterioration due to insufficient backlight luminance.
