FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: described is novel method of 2-acetylbenzo[h]quinoline (1) obtaining, which consists in interaction of benzo[h]quinoline (2) with ethanol and tetrachlorated carbon in presence of copper-containing catalyst, selected from the group Cu(acac)2, CuOAc, Cu(OAc)2, C14H10O4Cu·2H2O, C14H10O6Cu, CuBr, CuBr2, CuCl2·2H2O, CuI at temperature 140-160°C for 2-10 h with molar ratio [Cu]:[benzo[h]quinoline]:[ethanol]:[CCl4]=[1]:[100]:[500-1500]:[500-1500].
EFFECT: target 2-acetylbenzo[h]quinoline is applied as initial compound for synthesis of novel complexes of transition metals (iron, ruthenium, osmium), which are applied as active catalysts for selective reduction of aldehydes and ketones to alcohols.
