FIELD: process engineering.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to wire electrode and method of its production. Wire electrode (1) has core (2) containing metal or metal alloy and shell (3, 4) to cover said core (2). Said shell (2) includes one or several cover plies (3, 4), at least one (3) of which includes the mix of phases of β- and/or β'-brass and γ-brass. Note here said phases contained in at least one said cover ply (3) are located nearby in fine-grain structure. Said structure features grain size of phases of β- and/or β'-brass and γ-brass, in section perpendicular to wire electrode lengthwise axis (1), of 5 mcm or less. For production of wire electrode, core (2) containing copper or brass are coated with zinc and subjected to homogenising annealing to make wire with shell ply composed, primarily, of γ-brass. Additional homogenising annealing is performed whereat γ-brass at >600°C is transformed, in fact, into β-brass with content of zinc making at least 51 wt %. Thereafter, wire (1) is cooled down whereat fine-dispersed area of γ-brass is isolated from supersaturated β-solid solution.
EFFECT: higher strength, wear and erosion resistance.
