FIELD: wire electrode.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions is related to a wire electrode for electrical discharge cutting and a method for its production. The wire electrode has a core (2) containing a metal or metal alloy, and a protective coating (3, 4, 6) surrounding the core (2) containing one or more layers of protective coating (3, 4, 6), of which one contains regions (3), the morphology of which corresponds to block-like particles that are spatially separated, at least at their periphery, from each other, from the material of the layer that contains these regions, and the material of one or more additional layers and/or the core material by cracks. When considering a wire cross-section perpendicular or parallel to the longitudinal axis of the wire, the region constituting more than 50% of the surface area of the region with a block-like particle morphology contains a copper-zinc alloy with a zinc concentration of 38 to 49 wt.%.
EFFECT: invention makes it possible to increase the productivity of wire electrode erosion cutting without compromising the contour accuracy and surface quality of the processed workpiece compared to bare brass wires by providing a wire electrode coated with an abrasion-resistant coating, which promotes straightness and bending rigidity of the wire electrode.
