SUBSTANCE: invention relates to lighting engineering. The method of driving a light source (11, 12, 13), wherein a light source is alternately turned on and off according to an on/off pattern, wherein the working cycle of the on/off pattern varies in order to vary the average light intensity of the light source, and wherein the form of the on/off pattern varies in order to transmit data. Therefore, a control signal for the light source includes information on data and information on the working cycle. The working cycle varies within a range from almost zero to almost 100%, and data are changed and transmitted without affecting the working cycle.

EFFECT: high rate of transmitting data and preventing visible flicker of the light source.
