FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: method is based on identifying and analyzing a fatty acid composition of patient's red blood cell membranes that is followed by calculating a risk factor (R) as shown by C20:4n-6 and C20:5n-3 fatty acid ratio. If the R value is up to 10.40-10.64, a risk of developing COPD is considered to be low; if the R value falls within the range of 10.65 to 14.71-17.31, a risk of developing COPD is considered to be moderate; the R value being from 17.32 to 29.80-35.4, mild COPD is diagnosed. Using the method enables diagnosing a risk of developing COPD, predicting the disease progression and conducting the timely treatment at an earlier stage following the onset of the disease.

EFFECT: method is an adequately informative and accurate diagnostic technique for COPD; it has no counter-indications that enables predicting the development of the disease with minimum clinical manifestations of the pathological process.
