SUBSTANCE: method comprises: mapping a first time protocol signal (TPS), carrying master clock time protocol data, to a first transmission signal, determining direct mapping delay d_mf, and providing d_mf to an element 12 for calculating path delay asymmetry; mapping a second TPS, carrying master clock time protocol data, to the first transmission signal, determining reverse mapping delay d_mr, and providing d_mr to an element 14 for calculating path delay asymmetry; applying FEC to the first transmission signal, determining direct FEC delay d_fecf, and providing d_fecf to an element 16 for calculating path delay asymmetry; applying FEC to a second transmission signal, determining reverse FEC delay d_fecr, and providing d_fecr to an element 18 for calculating path delay asymmetry; calculating path delay asymmetry depending on d_mf, d_mr, d_fecf and d_fecr 20; and providing path delay asymmetry to a time protocol client at a second client node 22.

EFFECT: providing path delay asymmetry for synchronising time between master clocks at a first client node and slave clocks at a second client node through a server-based communication network, performing synchronisation between said clocks.
