FIELD: process engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to cutting of hard-to-machine metals. Insert comprises top surface and bottom thrust surface, side surface or multiple side surfaces connecting the latter to make cutting edges, and central bore. Top surface has angular ledges dividing it into identical sectors to make upward surface abutting on front surface and downward surface abutting on central bore ledge. Ledges of bulged smoothly varying shape are arranged radially between said angular ledges to enter the recesses at front surface and to abut on central bore ledge. Ratio between front surface area between cutting edges and central bore to plane extending through cutting edges its projection on said plane is selected to make 1.05…1.3. Or, ratio between cutting edge length and wavy line length extending over upper surface in cross-section of ledges and recesses through intersection of projections of radial ledges and sections of front surfaces between radial lines extending through angular ledges of top surface and insert bore axis makes 1.1…1.5.Insert is fitted in seats or cassettes of face cutter.

EFFECT: higher hardness in machining of hard-to-cut materials.
