SUBSTANCE: invention describes a method of decoding an image. A method of decoding an image comprises steps of: obtaining prediction mode information of a current block from a bit stream; determining motion vector predictor candidates from among motion vectors of adjacent blocks adjacent to the current block; determining a motion vector predictor of the current block from among the motion vector predictor candidates; and obtaining the motion vector of the current block based on the motion vector predictor and the difference vector between the motion vector of the current block and the motion vector predictor of the current block, wherein the image is hierarchically split from a plurality of maximum coding units, according to information about the maximum size of a coding unit, into coding units of coded depths according to depths, wherein a coding unit of a current depth is one of rectangular data units split from a coding unit of an upper depth, wherein the coding unit of the current depth is split into coding units of a lower depth, independently from neighbouring coding units.
EFFECT: efficient image decoding.
