SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and a system for simulating road characteristics in a region where a vehicle is moving. When a vehicle is moving with a given speed, a sequence of characteristic values is generated, where each characteristic value corresponds to its own given range detected by the vehicle. The Markovian chain model for road characteristics is updated when successive characteristic values change, wherein the model presents corresponding probability elements in a matrix of transition events from each given value to the next successive range. Each element of the matrix has a value πi,j, which is a weighted frequency of transition events from a first characteristic value to a second successive characteristic value, divided by the weighted frequency of transition events beginning from the first characteristic value, as a result of which the matrix successively approximates road characteristics in said region.
EFFECT: high efficiency of detecting vehicle movement.
