SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method and an apparatus for generating a menu display, particularly, but not limited to, generating a system of shortcuts for an user interface. The method comprises the following steps: selecting a plurality of menu items from a plurality of potential menu items distributed on a plurality of hierarchical levels, based on the most frequently used and difficult to access menu items; simultaneously displaying the selected items in a menu of shortcuts; assigning a weight coefficient to each menu item based on the frequency of use and difficulty of accessing the items; storing in a storage device the menu items that have been assigned weight coefficients, and continuously updating contents of said storage device.

EFFECT: providing easy access to the most difficult to access and most frequently used menu items.
