SUBSTANCE: composition for inhibiting scaling in membrane systems contains 5-40 wt % of a copolymer of acrylic acid-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid and 5-40 wt % of polymaleic acid. Also methods of inhibiting scaling and deposits from an incoming stream passing through a membrane system and inhibiting formation of calcium carbonate and deposition from an incoming stream passing through a membrane system are described, which comprise adding an effective amount of said composition into the incoming stream after adjusting pH of the incoming stream in the range of 7.0 to 10.0, further adjustment of temperature of the incoming stream in the range of 5°C to 40°C if the membrane system is a RO, NF, ED, EDI system or a combination thereof, and further adjustment of temperature of the incoming stream in the range of 40°C to 80°C if the membrane system is a MD system. Said composition may further contain an effective amount of one or more fluorophores.

EFFECT: effective inhibition of calcium carbonate deposits with low water turbidity.
