FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method includes generating initial ionisation in a chamber filled with a high-pressure gas mixture, and illuminating the chamber with a focused laser beam. Illumination is carried out using pulsed-periodic laser radiation with separate pulse duration greater than D/v, where D is the cross dimension of the radiating volume, and v is the speed of sound in the gas at the temperature of radiating volume. The interval between successive pulses is not greater than D2/χ, where χ is thermal diffusivity of the gas in the region of the radiating volume.
EFFECT: high spectral brightness of the radiation source.
