SUBSTANCE: computer-implemented inter-planar coding method comprises steps of, in a video encoder: determining inter-planar coding mode for part of an image frame; instantiating the corresponding value for an inter-planar coding mode indicator; and embedding the mode indicator in a binary stream. The binary stream includes an encoded vector associated with part of the image frame. The first mode indicator value corresponds to the first inter-planar coding mode, wherein an encoded motion vector includes components in multiple dimensions. The second mode indicator value corresponds to the second inter-planar coding mode, wherein components of the encoded motion vector include components in only one dimension.
EFFECT: improved coding efficiency.
