FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: converter comprises a converting plate made of an anisotropic nonlinear crystal which is capable of converting focused laser pulses, entering the plate through its end surface, into terahertz radiation with the formation of Cherenkov cone, and an optical prism placed at the output of the generated terahertz radiation, the said prism being transparent in the terahertz range and in contact by one of its faces with the said plate on the entire front surface of the plate. The converting plate is made of the said crystal while satisfying the condition of the orientation of its crystallographic axes relative to the direction of propagation and the direction of polarisation of the laser pulses, which ensures the orthogonality of the vector of the induced nonlinear polarisation relative to the vector of the electric field intensity on one of the generants of the terahertz Cherenkov cone, generated by the nonlinear polarisation vector. The optical prism is arranged relative to the converting plate opposite to the said generant of the terahertz Cherenkov cone.
EFFECT: improved spectral characteristics of the optical-terahertz converter.
