SUBSTANCE: invention relates to storage and transfer of coded multimedia data. A method of retrieving multimedia data comprises analysing information of a manifest file for multimedia content, wherein the information of the manifest file indicates that at least one representation of the multimedia content includes a temporal sub-sequence, wherein the temporal sub-sequence includes only random access point (RAP) pictures; determining one or more byte ranges corresponding to data locations for said temporal sub-sequence in one or more corresponding segments of said at least one representation; and initiating one or more data requests for said temporal sub-sequence, wherein the requests set byte ranges of corresponding segments of said at least one representation in order to retrieve RAP pictures of said temporal sub-sequence without retrieving other pictures of segments which are not included in said temporal sub-sequence.

EFFECT: high efficiency of network streaming of multimedia data.
