FIELD: instrument making.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a positron emission tomography (PET), and in particular to detection of coincident events in time of flight (TOF) PET. Invention consists in that a first signal detector generates a first output signal if a photodetector signal satisfies a first signal criterion; wherein first signal criterion identifies photodetector signal as indicating initial scintillating photons generated by a scintillator in response to received radiation photons; a second signal detector generates a second output signal if photodetector signal alternatively meets a second signal criterion, wherein second signal criterion identifies photodetector signal as indicating subsequent scintillating photons generated by scintillator in response to received radiation photons; and radiation signal detector evaluates first and second output signals to determine whether second output signal is within a reception time slot, wherein received first output signal determines start point of reception time slot, and if second output signal is received within reception time slot, radiation signal detector identifies photodetector signals indicating radiation received by scintillator; and if second output signal is not received within reception time slot, radiation signal detector does not identify photodetector signals indicating radiation received by the scintillator.
EFFECT: technical result is improved quality of reconstructed image.
