SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. A method of coding video data comprises determining a merge candidate set for a current nonsquare prediction unit of a current coding unit, wherein the merge candidate set includes a top left merge candidate, a top merge candidate, a top right merge candidate, a left merge candidate, a bottom left merge candidate and a temporal merge candidate; excluding merge candidates from the merge candidate set that are within another prediction unit of the current coding unit based on spatial locations of merge candidates and without comparing motion information of a corresponding merge candidate in the merge candidate set with motion information of any other prediction units; and performing a merge motion vector prediction process for the current prediction unit using the merge candidate set.
EFFECT: reducing computational complexity of the coding and decoding process.
