FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: image data are converted for display on a target display. A sigma conversion function provides a free parameter, wherein conversions at node points are not subject to the effect of the free parameter, wherein the free parameter controls contrast in the middle region, and the node points comprise node points of the black level and the white level and a node point of middle tones, the node point of the black level corresponds to conversion from the black level of the colour timing display used in colour timing or confirming image data into the black level of the target display, the node point of the white level corresponds to conversion from the white level of the colour timing display into the white level of the target display. The node point of middle tones affects the target brightness of the image data of the target display; where the black level of the colour timing display differs from the black level of the target display and/or the white level of the colour timing display differs from the white level of the target display. Therefore, conversion can be selected such that it automatically adapts image data for display on the target display such that creative concept embodied in the image data is maintained.

EFFECT: providing image viewers with the viewing experience which exploits the capabilities of the displays on which the said images are viewed.
