SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding images. In order to provide better encoding of high dynamic range images for use in high dynamic rang technical systems, a method of encoding a high dynamic range image is provided ,comprising the steps of: inputting pixel colors of an input high dynamic range image, wherein the pixel colors have luminance and chromaticity information; applying a function inverse to a mapping function to derive the brightness code (v) of the luminance of a pixel color , the mapping function is predetermined as containing a first partial function, which is specified as , where ρ – the tuning constant, and v – the brightness code corresponding to the luminance to be encoded, and a second partial map defined as L=LmPγ, where Lm a peak luminance of a predefined reference display, and a gamma is a constant which is preferably 2.4, outputting a matrix of pixels matrix having a color encoding containing luminance codes.
EFFECT: technical result is to improve the encoding of HDR images by selecting suitable functions on the brightness axis.
