FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hardening of materials, particularly to methods of chemical-thermal treatment of items by application of metal-containing coatings for different purposes. Method involves chemical-heat treatment of articles made from material capable of saturation by nonmetals of 2nd period with formation of solid solution of non-metals of 2nd period and unstable compounds, wherein first surface layer is saturated with nonmetal of 2nd period and deposited on surface of metals of IV-V groups, after which self-propagating high-temperature synthesis reaction of metals of IV-V groups with nonmetals of 2nd period is initiated by pulse heating of item surface to temperature T, selected from following conditions: T>Ti; T>Td, where Ti is initiation temperature self-propagating high-temperature synthesis reaction between metals of groups IV and V and nonmetals of 2nd period; Td is temperature of dissociation of unstable compounds of nonmetals of 2nd period with material of article.
