FIELD: lighting.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to connection of light guides, specifically to methods of breaking optical fibre. In order to produce a chip to the optical fibre is applied axial stretching in a certain location, wherein time-varying axial stretching is applied to maintain stress intensity factor of crack in tolerable limits for production of stable crack growth at reasonable speed for chipping fibre without need for polishing of end surface. Thorough monitoring of tension force applied over time makes it possible to control speed of propagation of cracks by maintaining essentially constant stress intensity factor. Applied force of axial tension is reduced over time and/or crack growth (crack propagation). As a result of strain energy in material of fibre is released to form a single plane with optical quality surface does not require polishing. On chipped end of optical fibre is formed essentially flat optical surface of an improved optical quality.
EFFECT: enabling breaking of optical fibre so as to minimise light loss when fibres are installed in series.
