SUBSTANCE: presented invention relates to high dynamic range image (HDR) encoding/decoding. We describe an image encoding unit arranged to encode a high dynamic range image. Image encoding unit comprises an LDR selector, an HDR selector, and a code mapping unit. LDR selector performs identification of a low dynamic range of luminances (R_Norml_LDR) or corresponding range of luma code values (R_LDR) within the total range of luminances (Range_HDR) covered by the high dynamic range image. HDR selector selects at least one complementary range (R_above) within the total range of luminances (Range_HDR), comprising mostly luminances not covered by the low dynamic range of luminances (R_Norml_LDR).
EFFECT: to improve the efficiency of HDR image encoding/decoding, through presenting an LDR image inside an HDR image in one frame.
