SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering. Image coding unit, configured for high dynamic range image encoding, comprises a first receiver to receive a lower dynamic range; first code mapping unit configured to encode in a first image all pixels of high dynamic range image with luminance in a lower dynamic range; a second receiver for receiving maximum redundancy, which specifies to which amount luminances already encoded in first image need to be redundantly encoded again; an image processing unit arranged to determine, based upon maximal redundancy, which pixels of high dynamic range image need to be encoded in a second image; second code mapping unit arranged to encode in second image luminances of pixels of high dynamic range image which need to be encoded in second image; and a formatter arranged to output first and second images as an encoded output signal.

EFFECT: technical result consists in improvement of efficiency of encoding luminances.
