FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: beryllium metal is produced by magnesiothermal reduction of beryllium fluoride at 900°C in high-frequency electric furnaces with a graphite crucible. A magnesium powder and a beryllium fluoride are placed in layers in a graphite crucible for reduction. The uppermost layer of beryllium fluoride and the lowermost layer of magnesium comprise at least 40% of the total amount of reactant. The amount of magnesium used for the reduction comprises 75% of thestoichiometrically-required. The reduction of beryllium and melting are carried out in an argon atmosphere. The beryllium fluoride and the magnesium powder are placed in the crucible in layers again after melting and cooling products to 600-650°C, and the reduction process is repeated.
EFFECT: reduction of beryllium losses and beryllium fluoride and magnesium consumption.
