FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method of multilayer coating application on a substrate is described, comprising: (a) application of a pigment basecoat colour-imparting composition without any intermediate priming filler, directly onto the cured electrodeposited primer coating, connected to the said substrate to form a curable colour-imparting base layer, and (b) application of a curable unpigmented coating composition onto the said base layer to form a transparent coat over the said base layer. This base coat layer is formed by application of polyhydrazide-containing curable aqueous composition including: (i) a continuous phase containing water, and (ii) a dispersed phase comprising: (A) polymer particles obtained by polymerization of a mixture of ethylenically unsaturated monomer compounds, contaning ethylenically unsaturated monomers including: (1) ethylenically multi unsaturated monomer and (2) ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing keto- or aldo- group.
EFFECT: coatings meet commercial standards of appearance and physical and chemical properties.
