FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: optical coherence tomography (OCT) is conducted with measurement of retinal nerve fibers peripapillary layer (RNFL) thickness for each eye in four segments - temporal, upper, nasal and lower. If the asymmetry of the average RNFL thickness by the OCT results is more than 23% between the worst and best functional eyes, the RNFL thickness of the functionally worst eye is less than 70 mcm in at least two segments of the optic nerve disk, and less than 80 mcm in at least one segment of the functionally best eye, treatment of optic nerve atrophy of both eyes is indicated.
EFFECT: method allows to increase the reliability of detection of indications for treatment, which is achieved due to a differentiated evaluation of the peripapillary RNFL thickness in four segments, taking into account the best and the worst eye in functional terms.
