FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: audio data are accepted including one or more audio objects. The sound objects include sound signals and associated metadata. The metadata include, at least, the position of the audio object and the size of the audio object. For the audio object the virtual source gain values are calculated from the virtual sources at the respective locations of the virtual source within the region or volume of the sound object determined by the position of the audio object and the size of the audio object. A set of the gain values of the audio object for each of the plurality of output channels is calculated based on, at least, partially calculated values of the virtual source gain. Each output channel corresponds to, at least, one reproducing loudspeaker.

EFFECT: improving the localization of sound objects.
