SUBSTANCE: audio playback data is received, including one or more audio objects, and metadata associated with each of the one or more audio objects. Playback environment data is received, including an indicator of the number of playing speakers in the playback environment and an indicator of the location of each of the playing speakers within the playback environment. Sound objects are represented in one or more signals supplied to the speakers by applying an amplitude panning process to each sound object. Moreover, the amplitude panning process is based on metadata associated with each sound object and the location of each playing speaker within the playback environment. Each signal applied to a speaker corresponds to at least one of the playing speakers.
