FIELD: transportation.

SUBSTANCE: method for automatically controlling the vehicle speed is proposed, comprising: receiving from the driver an input signal for entering the automatic motion speed maintaining mode; determining the threshold speed; increasing the vehicle speed to a speed higher than the threshold one by a first specified value or a fraction; reducing the vehicle speed to a speed lower than the threshold one by a second specified value or a fraction; and repeating the stages of raising and lowering the vehicle speed before receiving the input signal to exit the automatic motion speed maintaining mode. The method also includes detecting a vehicle ahead, determining the distance to the vehicle ahead, keeping the vehicle ahead within the distance range to the vehicle ahead, and calculating the first specified value and the second specified value, depending on the distance to the vehicle ahead. An automatic speed control device for a vehicle is also proposed.

EFFECT: improving fuel economy, reducing emissions.
