FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: membrane unit with a deformable membrane includes, at least, partially, a flexible fluid filled shell, one wall of which is formed by an elastic membrane attached to its edge by an elastically bendable support ring, a fixed shell support and selectively actuated means that cause relative movement between the support ring and the support for adjusting the pressure of the fluid in the shell, which leads to deformation of the membrane. The rigidity of the bending ring varies along the circumference of the ring, so that, when the membrane deforms, the ring bends unevenly, controlling the shape of the membrane to obtain its predetermined shape. The movement means include engagement with the ring of the elements, which are arranged so that a force is applied to the ring at the spaced adjustment points. There are, at least, three control points, and the control point is at each point or near each point on the ring, where the ring profile, necessary to obtain a given shape of the membrane after its deformation, has a turning point in the direction of the force applied at the control point between the two adjacent points, where the profile of the ring has an inflection point or a turning point in the opposite direction.

EFFECT: creating an adjustable non-circular lens, in which the lens is not distorted as its optical power increase.
