SUBSTANCE: data encoding method for encoding an array of data values, as data sets and transition codes for values not encoded by the data sets, wherein the transition code comprises a unary encoded part and a non-unary encoded part, in which an encoding parameter defining a minimum number of bits of a non-unary encoded part, where the encoding parameter is between 0 and a given upper limit; offset values of 1 or more are added to the encoding parameter to determine the minimum size of a part of the least significant data; one or more data sets are generated, indicating positions relative to the array of the data values, for the data values of predetermined magnitudes, for encoding a value of, at least, one least significant bit of each data value; corresponding complementary parts of the senior significant data and a part of the least significant data are generated from, at least, a part of each data value not encoded by one or more data sets; data sets are encoded into an output data stream.

EFFECT: generating a smaller amount of encoded data.
