SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the computer equipment. In the method, a data decoding apparatus comprises a decoder, which is configured to decode input encoded data values into decoded data values having a bit depth, while the input encoded data values are encoded as data sets and escape codes for values that are not encoded as the data sets, moreover, the escape code comprises a prefix portion, which has a prefix length capped by a maximum prefix length depending on the bit depth of the data values, and a non-unary coded suffix portion, which has a length, in bits, depending on the value encoded by the prefix portion according to such a relationship that, for at least values encoded by the prefix portion, the length of the non-unary coded suffix portion is greater than the length, in bits, of the prefix portion.
EFFECT: reducing the maximum code length while maintaining encoding performance.
