FIELD: engine devices and pumps.
SUBSTANCE: control system of the internal combustion engine performs the control of the normal operation mode including lean control for setting air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas coming into an exhaust gas purification catalyst, on lean air-fuel ratio, and rich control for setting air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas coming into the exhaust gas purification catalyst to the rich air-fuel ratio. The control of the normal operation mode includes control of the reference estimated decrease which reduces the estimated reference amount of accumulation in the lean control when during the period of execution of the lean control, the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing from the exhaust gas purification catalyst becomes lean estimated air-fuel ratio or more. The control system estimates that the exhaust gas purification catalyst is defective when the estimated reference amount of accumulation becomes smaller than the estimated wear value.
EFFECT: creation of the internal combustion engine control system provided with the exhaust gas purification catalyst having an oxygen accumulation capacity that suppresses NOX release.
