SUBSTANCE: internal combustion engine 100 includes supercharger 101, variable valve timing mechanisms B and C, catalyst 20, air-fuel ratio sensor 40 on the inlet side, an air-fuel ratio sensor 41 on the exhaust side and an air-fuel ratio control device. Air-fuel ratio control device sets the target air-fuel ratio of the inflowing exhaust gas based on the air-fuel ratio determined by sensor 41, and controls the amount of fuel supplied to combustion chamber 5 by feedback control so that the air-fuel ratio determined by sensor 40 corresponds to the target air-fuel ratio, when the purging amount of air blown from the inlet channel through the cylinder into the outlet channel due to the occurrence of overlapping valves is a purge reference amount or less. Air-fuel ratio control device sets the target air-fuel ratio of the inflowing exhaust gas based on the air-fuel ratio determined by sensor 41, and without performing feedback control, supplies to the combustion chamber an amount of fuel calculated from the target air-fuel ratio when the purge amount of air is greater than the reference purge amount.
EFFECT: preventing worsening of toxicity parameters of the engine.
