FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: method for decoding a transformation unit from a bit stream of a video stream containing, at least, one array of residual chrominance coefficients associated with a single chroma channel, is proposed. The method determines the size of the transformation unit associated with the hierarchical level of the transformation unit in the corresponding encoding unit, and identifies the maximum number of inverse transformations according to a certain size. The method decodes from the bitstream, at least, one array of the residual chrominance signal coefficients using the identified maximum number of transformations, selects inverse transformation for the decoded arrays of the residual chrominance signal coefficients, wherein the inverse transformation is selected from a predefined set of inverse transformations, and applies the selected inverse transformation to each of the arrays of residual chrominance signal coefficients, for decoding the residual signal samples for the chroma channel of the transformation unit.
EFFECT: reducing the complexity and size of the logic used to support multiple transformation sizes to transform video data between the frequency domain and the spatial domain.
