SUBSTANCE: encoding method includes receiving an input image with a visual dynamic range (VDR) in a sequence of input images, where the input VDR image contains the first bit depth; selecting a specific advanced quantization function from one or more available advanced quantization functions selected from global quantization, linear quantization, linear stretching, curve-based quantization, quantization optimized by the probability density function (Pdf), Lloyd-Max quantization, section-based quantization, perceptual quantization, vector quantization; applying an advanced quantization function to the input VDR image to generate a base layer input image where the base layer input image contains the second bit depth that is smaller than the first bit depth; compressing image data obtained from the base layer input image into a base layer video signal (BL); and compressing, at least, a portion of the image data obtained from the input VDR image into one or more video signals of the enhancement layer (EL).
EFFECT: minimizing the amount of image data with a visual dynamic range that are to be transferred to the expansion levels.
