FIELD: electronic equipment.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electronic equipment, namely to a method for modifying the emission surface of electrodes for field emission instruments. Method comprises placing, in common evacuated housing 1, anode electrode 3.1 and cathode electrode 3.2 having a working surface, the material of which has field emission properties. Method also provides for creating periodically varying potential differences between external terminals 6.1, 6.2 of these electrodes. As anode electrode, the same electrode as the cathode one is used, and the potential difference is created in the form of a sequence of alternating polarity pulses of equal amplitude and shape with an adjustable repetition frequency. When setting the frequency of repetition, the value of the slowly varying component of the current flowing through the external terminals of the electrodes is determined for each of the frequency values, and such a determination is completed after the steady-state value of this parameter is reached, and the modification process as a whole – after the determination of this parameter for the last of the set values of the repetition frequency.
EFFECT: creation of conditions for the realization of a bi-directional self-organizing process of mass transfer leading to the stabilization of the emission properties of the modified electrode surface without reducing its emissivity while simultaneously modifying the emission surface of the two electrodes.
