FIELD: internal combustion engines.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of engine construction, specifically to methods of controlling an internal combustion engine when it is started. Engine has a cylinder in which a piston is mounted, said piston moving back and forth and driving a crankshaft, which is rotatably mounted in the crankcase of the engine. Piston delimits a combustion chamber into which a spark plug protrudes. Internal combustion engine has a starter device for starting the internal combustion engine. Ignition of the spark plug takes place at an ignition timing (ZZP) set by the control unit. Ignition timing (ZZP) in the idle speed range is determined based on the idling speed control mode, in which the ignition timing is the earliest (ZZP1). Internal combustion engine has a decompression valve which, in the open state, connects the combustion chamber to the decompression space and which, when the internal combustion engine starts up, is open and closes if pressure (p) in combustion chamber (29) exceeds closing start pressure (p1). To achieve reliable closing of the decompression valve, it is provided that in the idling speed range for at least one engine cycle (x1, x2), ignition occurs at closing ignition timing (ZZP2), different from the timing set by the idling control mode, and corresponding to the angle of rotation of the crankshaft, which is at least about 5° ahead of earliest ignition timing (ZZP1).

EFFECT: technical result is higher reliability of starting the engine equipped with a decompression valve.
